A customer for my used crutches

AUSSIE Shane Andrews had a rough start to his Batam holiday last Saturday night, breaking his ankle in a fall at Goodies. Well, it wasn’t exactly a fall. Seems he had a few too many drinks and decided to jump off the railing of the main dining room at Goodies.

The drop is at least 12 feet – to a hard clay surface. Kind of like jumping onto cement. He is 60 years old.

The avid surfer was in great spirits the next day, however, after a trip to the hospital and with a new cast on his left foot. And with new crutches, which I happened to still have from my parasailing accident in Penang, Malaysia, 15 months earlier.

The crutches had been sitting in my apartment since then and I expected to eventually throw them out. Fortunately, I didn’t, and now am $40 richer and Shane has some mobility.

Since he had already lost his wallet and credit cards, Shane decided to hobble back to Australia (via plane, of course) and try Batam another time. I doubt he will be doing any surfing for awhile.

Lifetime journalist, author, magazine editor and publisher, now semi-retired and traveling the world. My plan, after living in Costa Rica for 14 months, was to visit a new country in southern Europe every three months to experience the culture and the challenge of adapting to a new environment, while on a fixed income. That plan was sidetracked when I was offered a job in Indonesia, providing an opportunity to explore Asia. Indonesia lasted for a 4 wonderful years but I have now moved on to Hua Hin, Thailand.
