Airlines – what a rip!

When I moved to Costa Rica from Florida last year my airfare was $340 roundtrip. That included any fees. In addition, I was surprised at the airport that I was not charged any bag fees, even though I had two suitcases and a backpack. Things have changed much for the worse since then, although I know this is not news to anyone who has traveled in the past year.

I have just booked a one-way ticket to Atlanta. The price of the ticket was $231. Fees added on another $59. not too bad, except, the asirline I’m flying doesn’t actually give you a seat at that price. You have to purchase one. Since my flight has two legs, I had to purchase a seat for each leg. An additional $20 for a seat. Total now is $310.

But we’re not done. Spirit Airlines also charges for both your first and second checked bags. It also charges for any carry-on bag. Since I have two suitcases and a backpack, I ended up paying $103 for baggage fees, two checked and one carry-on. If my suitcases are more than 40 pounds (it used to be 50 pounds), there is another surcharge. Total now is $413, which is $73 more than my round-trip fare of a year ago.

About 2bagsandapack

Lifetime journalist, author, magazine editor and publisher, now semi-retired and traveling the world. My plan, after living in Costa Rica for 14 months, was to visit a new country in southern Europe every three months to experience the culture and the challenge of adapting to a new environment, while on a fixed income. That plan was sidetracked when I was offered a job in Indonesia, providing an opportunity to explore Asia. Indonesia lasted for a 4 wonderful years but I have now moved on to Hua Hin, Thailand.
