Playa Hermoso/screen door

Sept. 28, 2010

Feeling much better now, thank you very much all. Had a pleasant surprise today (Monday) as I finally was able to bike to the post office. First, the woman there now recognizes me and remembers my name so I didn’t need my usual note. Had a package with an LED light for my computer, which will come in handy when the power goes off. Mailed a letter to my daughter, too. The surprise was when I stopped by Jack’s place. Figured I peddled all the way to his end of town so I should stop by. He hates “stop-bys” but what the heck. Caught him napping. Anyway, we decided to get some lunch and he suggested Playa Hermosa, which is 5-6 kilometers south of Jaco and is pretty much the surfing capital of Costa Rica. The world surfing championships were held there last year. Quiet area with some hotels, bars and restaurants, but not commercial like Jaco. The beach is black sand and the surf is heavier than at Jaco. Quite nice. We had lunch of chicken burritos, which came with salsa, french fries and shaved cabbage salad ($5.20). Served by a cute Nicaraguan waitress named Abigail. Sorry, no pictures. I wasn’t anticipating a road trip when I went to check mail.

Screen door

When I had a screen door put on the front and screens put on the windows, I didn’t think I would need another screen door on the back. It turns out I did, as I’ve been keeping the back door closed now to keep out the insects. It’s been effective but keeping the back door closed has shut off the ventilation. So, I’m going to spend for another screen door in back. After waiting for 10 days, Mario finally showed up this morning to measure it and will get back with a price before we go ahead. I expect it will cost about the same as the front door – $160. Well worth the cost.

Finally came up with a name – Scat – for the stray. She is now a regular every evening for dinner. Last night, when I came home from walking about, she followed me back, came in, and decided to get in my lap. First time. I think she wanted to stay the night but I have no cat litter yet and can’t take the chance she will wet the rug, so she went out – looking at me kind of sadly through the screen. Wednesday: tried to keep her in when I crashed but she tried to claw through the screen. Outside cat Scat.

Four months

Believe it or not, Thursday marks four months I’ve been in-country. Definitely worth a tip of the Cuervo that night. Time is really going by rapidly and, before we know it, it will be a year, and then two. I’ve heard that the worst month of the rainy season is October. Looks like that may be true, as September is ending up very wet. It’s been raining most of the time for the past 10 days. Yesterday was non-stop all day, except for a brief time in the morning when I got my walk in. Tried to walk this morning (Wednesday) but it started raining. Did redirect my walk to go by the Poseidon to say hi to Jenny at work – but she looks a little different in the light of day and without the usual intoxicants in my system.

Spent the afternoon trying to figure out the WordPress blog stuff, downloading photos and stuff. Much harder than building a Web site. My first four months end with me listening to Fleetwood Mac and Janis Joplin (among many others), sipping a bourbon and Coke Light.

Lifetime journalist, author, magazine editor and publisher, now semi-retired and traveling the world. My plan, after living in Costa Rica for 14 months, was to visit a new country in southern Europe every three months to experience the culture and the challenge of adapting to a new environment, while on a fixed income. That plan was sidetracked when I was offered a job in Indonesia, providing an opportunity to explore Asia. Indonesia lasted for a 4 wonderful years but I have now moved on to Hua Hin, Thailand.
